This book is an English translation of ʿAjāʾib wa-mayāmir al-malāk Mīkhāʾīl, the collection assembled by the late Hegumen Samaan al-Suryani of the Monastery of the Virgin Mary (al-Suryan) in the Wilderness of Shīhīt, translated from the third edition, revised by Anba Mattaus, Bishop and Abbot of the Monastery, and printed in 2005.
Al-Suryani drew the material from manuscripts in the monastery library and selected twelve miracles of the Archangel Michael, assigning one to each month of the Coptic year so that a different text would be available for each monthly commemoration on the twelfth. The first edition was printed by the Church of the Archangel Michael at al-Zahir, with proceeds directed to that church’s building fund. A second edition followed in 1982 with additions and revision, and the third in 2005.
The translation carries the whole of that book. It includes the front matter of the Arabic: al-Suryani’s dedication of 1974, the preface by Anba Mattaus, and the introductions to the first and second editions. The twelve mayamir follow in their calendar order, from Tut through Misra.
The second part of the book is not from al-Suryani. The Rite of the Biography for the glorious Archangel Michael has been edited and translated separately from two manuscript witnesses, Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate MS Liturgy 74 (AD 1444) and Berlin Staatsbibliothek MS Or. Quart. 597 (18th or 19th c.), and is printed in Coptic with English in facing columns. It supplies the order for the reading itself: the rubrics beginning after the Matins Raising of Incense, the Hymn of the Trinity, the Hymn of the Archangel Michael and a second hymn, the Hymn of the Blessing, and the full blessing in Coptic and English.
